Four die after drinking hooch in Assam

Jorhat, July 25: Four persons were killed and over 10 others fell seriously ill today after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in upper Assam”s Jorhat district, official sources said. The country-made ”poisoned liquor” was allegedly served in two hooch dens at Sobaibandha and Chokihat areas in the heart of Jorhat town, from where the deaths are being reported since midnight, the sources said.

Those taken seriously ill were admitted to Jorhat Civil Hospital after they complained of vomiting and diarrhoea. The deceased have been identified as Raju Deka (27), Bipin Bora (45), Debeswar Tati (45) and Sukan Tati (43).

After the incident, police raided about 15 illegal hooch dens along the roads in the affected areas this morning and also destroyed hundreds of litres of hooch.
