Four arrested for being involved in jewellery theft case

New Delhi: Three siblings have been arrested for allegedly stealing gold nosepins from a jewellery shop in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh area, police said today.

A jeweller, who used to purchase the stolen jewellery from them, has also been arrested, they said.

On January 31, the owner of a jewellery shop in Madipur, informed police that two women and a man had allegedly stolen 60 nosepins from his shop the day before, police said.

CCTV footages of the shop and nearby areas were analysed and during investigation it was revealed that a worker of the shop had overheard the accused mentioning Trilokpuri area during a discussion among themselves, DCP(West) Vijay Kumar said.

Acting on a tip-off, the three accused were apprehended from east Delhi’s Trilokpuri area yesterday, he said.

The accused, Chunni Lal (32) and his two sisters, used to steal gold jewellery by diverting the attention of the shopkeeper. Prem Kumar (48), who runs a jewellery shop in Nand Nagri, was apprehended and 48 gold nosepins were seized, he said.

“The accused used to targeted shops in distant areas. In most cases, they stole one or two small gold articles so that no police complaint is made by the shopkeepers. Also they used to target aged jewellers who sit alone in the shop,” the officer said.

“However this time, they stole close to 60 gold nosepins, leading to their arrest,” police said.
