Former Punjab CM Brar passes away

Punjab, September 06: Former Punjab Chief Minister and ex-Haryana Governor Harcharan Singh Brar died at his native village here today at the age of 87 after protracted illness.

A veteran Congress leader, Brar also held the post of Orissa Governor for six months in 1976.

He breathed his last in Sarai Naga village in Punjab’s Muktsar district and would be cremated tomorrow, family members said.

Brar, who played an instrumental role in creation of Muktsar district, is survived by his wife Gurbinder Kaur, son Kanwarjit Singh, an MLA, and daughter Kanwaljit.

Punjab government has declared three-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed leader. All government offices and educational institutions in the state will remain shut tomorrow.

The Haryana government has also declared a two-day state mourning.
