Former loan agent held for duping banks

New Delhi, May 20: A former loan agent, who used to take cheques from courier boys and encash them by depositing it in fake bank accounts, was arrested by Southeast Delhi Police on Thursday. The accused, identified as Sanjay, was apprehended with cheques of different banks, valued at Rs 22 lakh, four PAN cards, three fake voter ID cards and two driving licences in different names but with his photographs and fake stamp pads of different banks besides other items used for preparing fake identifications documents.

According to police, Sanjay was into this crime for past three years and has allegedly cheated various banks to the tune of around Rs 1 crore. Sanjay had earlier been arrested in cheating cases in Delhi and Noida as well as under Gangsters Act and was not appearing in any of them.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Ajay Chaudhary said that Sanjay was arrested near Lady Sri Ram College when he came there on a stolen motorcycle. “On search, documents like cheques issued in the names of different persons and companies, PAN cards and election identity cards were recovered from his possession,” the Additional CP said, adding he prepared forged documents like election cards, electric bills, driving licence, identity cards in different names and obtained original PAN cards in different names by putting his photos.

“He used to take cheques from courier boys and opened bank accounts in the same name as well as in the name of same company. He used to obtain cheques books and ATM cards from banks and withdraw cash from the banks through cheques and through ATM/Debit cards,” added Chaudhary.

Sanjay, a native of UP’s Gorakhpur, belongs to a middle class family. He came to Delhi in the year 2008 and started working as loan agent at a bank in Karkardooma. “He could not achieve the targets of the bank so he had to quit the job. Later, he came in contact with one Subhash who advised him regarding procedure of collecting courier cheques from courier boys and preparing fake documents,” Chaudhary added.
