Former Congress MLA Subhash Shelat was today suspended from the party for six years for being involved in anti-party activities. Shelat had contested as an independent candidate from Umreth constituency in the recently-concluded polls after he was denied party ticket. “Congress had an agreement with NCP not to field a candidate against NCP state president Jayant ‘Boski’ Patel who had decided to contest from Umreth seat,” said party spokesperson Manish Doshi, adding that the disciplinary action was taken by the state party president. Gujarat Congress had faced dissent during ticket distribution and leaders like former Deputy Chief Minister Narhari Amin and Dalit leader Girish Parmar had revolted against the party following denial of the tickets. Congress had won 61 seats in the elections, but their tally now stands at 59 following death of Savita Khant, MLA from Morva Hadaf seat in Panchmahal district, and resignation of Soma Patel, Lok Sabha MP from Surendranagar who had won from Limbadi Assembly seat.
