Foreign currency, gold seized at Mumbai airport

Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Customs seized foreign currency and `crude gold’ jewellery in two cases since last night and arrested a man.

“US dollars worth Rs 44.18 lakh and crude gold worth Rs 10.50 lakh were seized,” a Customs official said.

In the first case, AIU officers intercepted Sayyed Ali, resident of Karnataka, who was to board a flight to Sharjah.

He was found to have hidden bundles of US currency worth to Rs 44.18 lakh in his socks and a trolley bag.

Ali, who was subsequently arrested, told investigators that the currency belonged to one Salim from Dubai.

In another case, Rahul Premchandani, who had arrived from Dubai, was found to be carrying a `crude gold chain’ weighing 350 grams and worth Rs 10.50 lakh.

Premchandani had been booked for carrying foreign currency worth Rs 11.96 lakh in 2015 too. Further probe was on.
