Hyderabad, July 25: The production of foodgrains in the State has, for the first time since the formation of the State, reached the level of 204.04 lakh tonnes in 2008-09 as against 198.17 lakh tonnes in 2007-08.
However, the production of oil seeds went down by 56.6 per cent.
Oil seed production was 16.35 lakh tonnes in 2008-09 while it was 37.66 lakh tonnes in 2007-08. According to the Socio-Economic Survey of 2008- 09, the average daily retail prices of essential commodities have shown an increasing trend during 2008-09 compared to the previous year. In 2008-09, the Consumer Price Indices for Industrial workers increased by 11 per cent. The average daily wages of artisans and field labour of both men and women have also been increased.
The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at constant (1999-2000) prices for year 2008-09 is estimated at Rs 2,52,318 crore as against Rs 2,39,102 crore for 2007-08, thereby registering a growth of 5.53 per cent.
The Per Capita Income of the State has increased by 10.41 per cent. While at constant prices (1999-2000) it has gone up by 3.01 per cent. The GDP for all, at constant prices (1999-2000) for the year 2008-09, reflected a growth rate of 6.70 per cent.
Sales tax continues to be the major source of revenue for the State.
The revenue realised through Sales Tax during 2007-08 was Rs 19,026 crore as against Rs 15, 467 crore during 2006-07, registering an increase of 23.01 per cent. Out of total expenditure of Rs 69, 488 crore during 2007-08, the capital expenditure was 18.38 per cent.
The poverty ratio in the rural areas of the State continues to be less than the national average which can be attributed to the implementation of subsidised rice scheme. In the case of urban areas, the poverty ratio of the State is higher than that of the national average.
Similarly, the unemployment rate is higher in rural areas than in the urban areas of the State. During the first two years (2007-08 and 2008-09) of the 11th five-year plan, the economy of the State, on an average, grew at an encouraging rate of 8.08 per cent a few notches above the national average growth of 7.85 per cent, the survey pointed out.
