Coimbatore, November 02: Without nutritional security, talks about food security to the Indian population is incomplete, a top International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) official said today.
To achieve this, more investments and policy changes are needed in the production of cereals and pulses, to feed the growing population, particularly those below the poverty line, said ICRISAT Director General Willian D Dar.
Food security must include nutritional security, he said, adding that people should have proper balanced diet with increased intake of protein and minerals.
He said India small and marginal farmers of India are facing many challenges, even as they represent a greater part of the agricultural community.
ICRISAT’s new strategy to 2020 emphasises on the importance of harnessing markets to make farmers prosperous.
According to him this strategy bets on inclusive, market oriented development.
