Colombo, May 05: Detained former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka today went on an hunger strike after he was not allowed to attend Parliament by authorities, who wanted him to appear before a court martial.
“Gen. Fonseka began a hunger strike this morning. He was not given permission to attend Parliament today despite an appeal from Democratic National Alliance and United National Party members,” Democratic National Alliance General Secretary and Parliamentarian Vijay Herath told PTI.
Herath said though Parliament speaker Chamal Rajapaksa had assured that he would look into the matter, nothing has been done so far.
Fonseka, who is currently in military custody at the Navy Headquarters, is facing two court-martial.
The second court-martial, before which Fonseka appeared today, is hearing charges of alleged violation of military procurement procedures against him.
