Lucknow, January 18: The State Election Commission here Tuesday announced popular folk singer Malini Awasthi as its “first brand ambassador” who would promote voting practices through her songs.
“Malini Awasthi will now be creating awareness about voting rights among the public across Uttar Pradesh with the help of songs,” state’s Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha told reporters.
“She is quite popular among the masses. We are quite sure her appeal through catchy songs would considerably assist us in making people aware about the power of voting,” he added.
While the officials of the State Election Commission released a theme song titled ‘Jaago Jaago Desh Ke Matdaata’, they said more songs have been lined up for spreading awareness about voting rights.
“It’s just one song we are releasing today (Tuesday). Many such songs would be released in the coming days with an intention to make people realise their responsibility,” said Sinha, who wrote the lyrics of the theme song.
Awasthi, who was present at the song-release, said: “I feel privileged to be associated with the commission. I will make every effort to spread awareness about voting among the public.”
“I still feel a lot needs to be done for making people realise the importance of voting. Even today, the polling day is treated like a holiday by several people…There are many people who use their voter ID card merely as an identification tool,” she added.
The State Election Commission has planned a number of cultural programmes to observe the National Voters’ Day Jan 25.
