Flood situation worsens in UP

Uttar Pradesh, September 21: The flood situation may worsen in the next two days in uttar Pradesh as the water level in various rivers of Rampur, Moradabad, Bareilly, Bijnore, Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar rose alarmingly following heavy rains as well as the release of water from various dams.

State government officials said close to four lakh people in 600 villages of these four districts were directly affected. The Indian Army and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) rescued over 400 people from Moradabad and Bareilly on Monday but a shortage of food material and motor boats hampered rescue operations.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati has directed the administration to carry out relief works in the flood-affected districts of the state on war footing.

“During an emergency meeting to review the situation, Mayawati directed the officials to carry out relief works in Bijnore, Rampur, Moradabad, Shahjahanpur, Farrukhabad, Mathura and Bareilly districts of western UP on war-footing,” an official spokesman said on Monday.

She directed the officers of the Irrigation Department to monitor the security of all the barrages, embankments round-the-clock and asked them to shift the affected families to secure places.

The chief minister also directed the irrigation minister Nasimuddin Siddiqui to conduct survey of the flood-affected districts and review the relief works.

While sanctioning Rs 65 crore for flood-affected districts, the chief minister directed the district magistrates of Rampur and Bijnore to airlift people trapped in the floods.

She also directed the DGP to deploy PAC battalions in flood-affected districts.

Ganga, Ramganga and Kosi rivers inundating more areas of western UP and Terai areas . Besides, 11 districts of east UP were also facing flood fury.
The flood situation worsened further in the western districts of Uttar Pradesh with the death of four more persons in rain related incidents even as around 177 villages of Bareilly, Badaun, Pilibhit and Shahajanpur were inundated. The flood is set to worsen in a day or two as water released from barrages is yet to pass through Moradabad, Rampur and Bulandshar.

The Met office predicted more rainfall in west UP and Uttarakhand for next two-three days. In east UP, the districts affected by floods include Bahraich, Barabanki, Lakhimpur Kheri, Balrampur, Sitapur, Gonda, Basti and Azamgarh.
