Flood discharge likely to recede in Krishna district today

Vijayawada, October 06: The unprecedented floods in Krishna district, which created a havoc since the last three days, was likely to recede from today with the discharges from Prakasam barrage to bay of Bengal was ”steady” since 0100 Hrs, early today.

Talking to UNI, an official in the irrigation department said if there was no further discharges from Nagarjunasagar to Prakasam barrage, the discharges here also will come down.

He said normally during the last three days, the discharges of as much as 10,000 to 15,000 cusecs of water had increased by every passing hour.

He said till 0500 Hours, the authorities had discharged 10.93 lakh cusecs of water to sea from the barrage which is a record and highest so far after the latter received as much as 11.03 lakh cusecs from Nagarjunasagar.

The official said the water level of the barrage touched 22 feet at 0100 hrs today.

In view of the floods, crops of about 50,000 acres in the district was totally water-logged causing much damage and loss to the farmers.

Official sources said nearly 30 villages in this district were completely marooned and the threat to the city and lanka villages due to floods was not yet over.

Flood water was over flowing on a bridge at Arvindevari and in the city- Bhavanipuram, Krishna Lanka areas was completely under flood water. Likewise at Ibrahimpatnam and Yenamalakuduru near here witnessing the same situation.

Nearly 1000 flood vicitims were staying on the National Highway-9 as there was no sufficient relief camps for them. In the neighbouring Guntur District vehicular traffic came to a halt at Yandraee and Narkalapadu.

In Amaravati Mandal in Guntur District, about 30 villages had completely marooned, the sources added.

In Krishna District flood waters threw life out of gear in 8 island villages in the limits of Thotlavalluru Mandal.

Sources in the Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) said the rising of flood in Krishna would not cause any problem to power generation.

The sources said the NTTPs draw water from Krishna with seven pumps at Bhavanipuram and let out the used water into Budameru which goes into the river krishna.

Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Minister Botcha Satyanarayana said here that there will be no disruption in power supply and the generation too would continue in the NTTPS. Hundreds of horticulture crops in Guntur district were submerged under the flood waters.

Krishna District Collector Peeyush Kumar said the people should not believe rumors that the flood banks were weak. The flood bunds were ‘intact’ and people should not get panic, he added.
