Wellington, July 15: Stephen Fleming is set to end his association with Wellington cricket which will allow him to concentrate on his sports management business. Fleming stepped down as a board member of Cricket Wellington and is expected to withdraw from the Wellington Twenty20 side.
The former New Zealand captain retired from international and first-class cricket in 2008, but returned to captain a struggling Wellington team in the Twenty20 format.
Cricket Wellington board chairman, Ian Wells, said Fleming would be missed but added that the side would still benefit from his involvement with the high performance team. “It has been tremendous having a person of Stephen’s experience and wisdom on the Cricket Wellington board for the past year, and we acknowledge his desire to concentrate on his personal business interests,” Wells said. “It is also positive that Stephen won’t be lost to us with his agreement to work with our high performance team on an ongoing basis.”
Fleming last played for Wellington in February, and has stepped aside from active cricket to work with various individuals and sports organizations in the country as part of his business interests.
After Fleming took over as captain of Wellington, the side won four matches and lost three in the Twenty20 competition, but failed to make the finals.
