Flash strike by hospital staff ends peacefully

Hyderabad, October 13: The flash strike called by Indo-American Hospital employees on Monday night ended peacefully after the management assured a committee would be formed to look into their grievances.

Sources in the hospital said this committee would be looking into individual grievances of the employees. He added that most grievances were individual in nature. “Employees can come either in group or individually to get their grievances addressed,’’ an official said.

Employees performance appraisal activity done in September has been the root cause of discontent. Many employees were left extremely dejected with the process followed for appraisal and complained it had not been transparent. “I was very disappointed after my performance was declared poor when I had been working very hard for the last three years. There is a clear case of discrimination while evaluating employee performances,’’ an employee said on the condition of anonymity. Staff members were not prepared to discuss the issue as they got assurances from the management.

The strike was taken up by members of the non-medical staff and nearly 1,000 members participated. However, the strike was carried without affecting emergency services. Employees actually demanded that the Indo- American Hospital chairman N Balakrishna intervene and address the issue immediately.

After the employees had called the strike, all board members except Balakrishna had to swing into action. The issue was settled only after intervention of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu. It was his assurance which pacified agitating staff members.
