Kabul, May 08: At least 12 people have been killed due to flash floods unleashed by heavy rains in northern Afghanistan.
Five others also went missing as the floods caused widespread destruction in the Andarab, Dushi, Khanjan, and Tala wa Barfak districts of Baghlan province, the Pajhwok news agency reported on Saturday.
“The dead included five people from the same family. Two were killed in Dushi district, while five more lost (their) lives in Tala wa Barfak district,” the regional director of the National Disaster Management Authority, Mohammad Naseer Kuhzad, said.
He added that a survey team had been dispatched to the affected areas to assess property damage.
Landlocked Afghanistan with its rugged terrain is highly vulnerable to various kinds of natural disasters, which adversely impact the lives of at least 400,000 people every year, according to international aid agencies.
