Flash floods claim 30 lives in Bolivia

Bolivia, January 31: Flash floods in southern Bolivia have swept away a bus-load of people and a truck, claiming lives of at least 30 people as they were trying to cross the Molle-Punku River.

The two vehicles became trapped in muddy waters overnight while trying to cross the raging river. Chuquisaca police chief said 30 bodies have been recovered so far, but more people are feared dead.

Rescue teams and local volunteers are working round-the-clock in the remote area, searching for more victims.

Heavy rains and floods hit southern Bolivia this time last year, affecting some 24,000 families.

Rain regularly increases in Bolivia in January and February. However, officials say that climate change is also to blame.
