Baghdad, February 22: Five people were wounded when several mortars hit Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone early on Monday, an interior ministry official said.
“At around 6:00 am (0300 GMT), several mortars landed in the Green Zone, and five people were wounded,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
The US military confirmed that “there was an incident” in the area, which is home to several foreign embassies and government departments, but provided no further details.
A doctor at central Baghdad’s Medical City hospital said that four people were treated in relation to the attack.
Attacks in Iraq remain common, especially in Baghdad and the restive northern city of Mosul.
Two US pilots killed in northern Iraq accident
Two US army helicopter pilots were killed in an accident near an airfield in northern Iraq on Sunday, the military said in a statement.
“The aircraft made a hard landing inside the base. There were no enemy forces present and no hostile fire was reported,” the army said, without giving further details.
“The accident is under investigation.”
The latest deaths bring to 4,378 the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq since the 2003 invasion, according to the website icasualties.org.
Four police killed, two wounded in central Iraq attack
Four policemen were killed and two others wounded on Sunday when a homemade bomb engulfed their vehicle as they prepared to secure an electricity site in central Iraq, a security official said.
The blast occurred in Imam Wais, 70 kilometres (43 miles) from Baquba, the capital of Diyala province.
The casualties were members of Iraq’s electricity police, said an official from Baquba’s operational command headquarters.
In other violence on Sunday, a policeman was gunned down outside his house in the restive northern city of Mosul by unknown assailants, a security official said.
