Dharmapuri, January 27: Villagers clashed with police over demolition of a temple here and five policemen were injured after being attacked with stones.
Earlier, police burst teargas shells after the crowd refused to disperse from demolishing a roadside temple at Kammalapatti village, 23 km from here, police said.
Five personnel, including a sub-inspector, were injured in stone-hurling. The incident occurred after villagers started demolishing the temple and reconstructing it in front of the house of a person, who objected to it.
As a police party arrived, people started throwing stones, following which teargas shells were lobbed and they were chased away, police said. The injured police personnel have been hospitalised.
A strong police contingent has been posted at the village. No one was arrested so far.
