Five persons injured in clash

Kolkata: At least five persons were injured in a clash between residents of two adjoining areas at Sovabazar in north Kolkata today protesting the involvement of some locals in alleged anti-social activities.

A senior officer of Kolkata Police said, at least five persons were injured in the fight. They were undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals.

Two cases were filed and five persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident in which residents of Bhanga Basti and Tarikhana got into a fight this morning throwing soda bottles and hurling bricks at each other, he said.

“Last night around 11 PM a group of men and women of Tarikhana locality were returning home taking the Sovabazar street after performing a puja at Gangeswar Temple at Ahiritolla Ghat when an altercation took place between them and some persons of Bhanga Basti following a clash in front Hatkhola Post office. A police team intervened and dispersed the mob,” he said.

But this morning around 9.30 AM, the same group of persons from the localities got involved in a clash and started brick batting and hurled soda bottles, the officer added.

Shops and local bazar remained closed today and only a handful vehicles were seen plying on the roads, he said.

A police team from Jorabagan and Shyampukur police station besides Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel of Kolkata police have reached the place.

“The situation is now under control but we have kept our officers posted there to keep a check on any untoward incident,” the officer added.
