Jalgaon, July 09: Five children, including the son of a local corporator, were killed after being hit by a speeding passenger train on a bridge over a river in Jalgaon district of north Maharashtra, police said today.
Two of their friends managed to escape unhurt, they said.
The deceased — Shaikh Saleem Sirajuddin (16), Shaikh Akib Sirajuddin (13), Shaikh Ejaj Gayasuddin (10), Shaikh Raess Gayasuddin (13), Shaikh Altaf Salimoddin (14), all residents of Darga Ali Mohollah, Amalner — were on the railway tracks on Bori river bridge when the Bhusawal-Surat passenger train hit them, police said.
Altaf was the son of local corporator Md Saleem Topi, they said adding Saleem and Akib were brothers. Police said Ejaj and Raess were also siblings.
According to police, seven friends went to see repair work going on the tracks and while returning they saw the speeding train.
