Bahraich, July 20: Five persons were killed and 50 others injured when a bus plunged into a deep drain in Motipur area of the district today, police said here. The incident occurred when the passenger bus was on its way to Bahraich and plunged into the deep drain after a culvert caved in this morning, Additional Superintendent of Police V P Srivastava said.
Five persons, who were sitting on the roof of the bus, were killed on the spot, he said. Though police confirmed injuries to 20 persons, locals claim that the number of injured could be higher.
Eyewitnesses claimed that atleast 100 people were travelling in the bus. Srivastava said that joint teams of police, PAC and SSB have launched rescue operation on the spot and efforts were being made to pull out passengers trapped in the bus.
The injured had been admitted to government hospitals at Mihipurwa and Gayghat, he said.
