Muzaffarpur, July 09: At least five passengers were killed and 25 injured when a crowded private bus overturned at Murarpur-Guwatia near here today, Superintendent of Police Shudhangshu Kumar said. However, unconfirmed reports put the toll at about 15 and the number of injured at around 30.
The accident took place at about 1230 hrs some 30 km from here. Giving preliminary information about the incident, the SP said the Darbhanga-bound bus from Patna rolled down into a ditch and overturned after the driver lost control in a bid to save a cyclist coming from the opposite direction. While five passengers, including a woman, died on the spot, 25 sustained multiple injuries and were sent to the district hospital, where the condition of at least 15 was stated to be critical, Mr Kumar said. Soon after the accident local people rushed to the spot and launched the rescue operation with the help of police.
So far five bodies have been recovered, he said and did not rule out the possibility of more casualty.
