Five persons, including a police constable, were injured, one among them seriously, when two groups clashed with each other and damaged a few shops and houses at Palanpur in Gujarat, police said today.
Two groups attacked each other last night after a prayer meeting, following which a few houses and shops in
localities of Kamalpura, Delhi Gate, Nani Bazaar and Delvas were damaged, they said.
So far nine trouble-mongers form both the communities have been arrested, police said.
According to police, the seriously injured person was initially referred to Mehsana and then to Ahmedabad. Among
other injured, one person was hospitalised in civil hospital and his condition is reported to be stable.
“It was an altercation on a petty issue that erupted into the clash. The situation is under control now,” Deputy
Superintendent of Police K K Bhutadiya said, adding since most of the shops were closed in night hours not much damage to property is reported.
“In view of Janmashtami, Ramzan, and ensuing Independence Day, we have initiated precautionary measures to
maintain harmony between the two communities. A harmony meting was held today to ensure the peace in the town,” police said.
Police have intensified patrolling in the area and the situation is under control.
