Five held for violence near Parliament

New Delhi, February 24: Five persons from Maharashtra, on a dharna here demanding houses, were arrested for creating a ruckus on Parliament Street after a motorcyclist brushed passed one of them, police said today.

The protesters had indulged in violence late last night after a motorcyclist brushed passed a woman. They tried to beat up the driver and when police intervened, they started pelting stones.

For the past few days, the protesters from Maharashtra had been agitating at the Jantar Mantar demanding houses after their slums were demolished.

The arrested have been identified as Mangesh Khandeja (30), the leader of the group, Sanjeev Kumar Panda (43), Shiva (19), Dinannath Mishra (45) and Ramesh Sharma (33). They were released on bail today.

A few policemen suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Police had to use force to bring the crowd under control.

They also used water canons.
