Five girl Maoists surrender in Orissa

Keonjhar (Orissa), January 06: Five girl Maoists, all juveniles including one allegedly involved in murders, surrendered in Orissa’s Keonjhar district today, police said.

The rebels, belonging to the Kalinganagar division of CPI (Maoist), laid their arms in the presence of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Yashwant Jethwa.

Among them was Shanti Soy (16), the deputy commander of Kalinganagar division of the outfit, who is considered to be close to the secretary of Maoist’s divisional committee Sushil alias Basant, police said.

The girls said harassment by seniors and frustration at the outfit’s failure to uplift tribals forced them take the decision.

Shanti, who had joined the armed group two years ago, was involved in two killings besides in an attack on a police station at Daitary.

The ultras had played active roles in unleashing terror in Baitarani river basin area in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts, police said.
