Five-day skill development program on Kouna Craft underway in Imphal

Imphal [India]: A five day-long Livelihood Skill Development Program on the crafts of Kouna (water hyacinth) has been launched under the self sponsorship of Women Welfare Association, Imphal West at Kwakeithel Konjeng Leikai, Imphal West District.

In all, 20 women, including member of the association and girls, participated the workshop enhancing the skills of the participants.

Master Craft and renowned Kouna (Schoenoplectus Acutus) craft instructor Aruni is imparting training to the participants between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The training aims to develop the skills of women in rural areas by way of forming self help group (SHG) clusters and getting them to engage in productive works.

Women are being trained in the making of Kouna mats, mattress, jewellery boxes, bags, purses and flower bases, etc.

Thereafter, the association has taken the Kouna crafts as their profession, and ever since then the association has started participating in the all national, regional and state level crafts exhibitions held in different parts of the country. (ANI)
