Fishing season begins from today

Hyderabad, June 15: After a two-month break, the fishing season will resume in the east coast on June 15 midnight. On Sunday, the Vizag harbour was a
beehive of activity with fishermen swarming the area, while boat operators carried out last-minute repairs of their vessels.

The demand for ice and fuel has gone up considerably this time round with some boat operators planning a 15-day sojourn in the sea. Sources said each boat stocks 3,000 to 5,000 litres of oil as well as two to three tonnes of ice. Drinking water along with fishing material like nets are also being stored for the hectic fishing activity.

The last season had yielded a good harvest and the fishermen are pinning hopes for an encore this time. The seafarers were happy with the government for releasing oil subsidy funds. In all, there are 600 fishing boats in the Vizag harbour.
