The Fishermen’s Cooperative Society has taken up work on cleaning the 320 acre weed infested Vaiyapuri Lake in Palani town with the twin objectives of using the water for drinking and irrigation and rearing fish on commercial basis.
The tank, considered a holy lake where devotees used to take bath before worshipping Lord Muruga, is now full of acquatic weeds.
Sangili, the society president said though recent rains had filled it, fishermen felt the water would dry fast as the weeds remained there. These weeds would suffocate the fish in the lake and it was imperative they be removed, he said.
Claiming that the society has 2,000 members, he said 150 fishermen are now engaged in removing the weed. Each batch of 150 fishermen would be able to clear the bushes in a month.
Clean the lake and earn by fishing is their goal for now, he said.
