Fish Oil a Must for Healthy Brain

A recent research has affirmed the benefit of omega-3 fatty acids which are found is fish oil. While it is known that omega-3 fatty acids are a must for mental fitness, it has been claimed that lack of the desired level of omega-3 fatty acids could instigate poor scores for visual memory, problem solving, multi-tasking and abstract thinking.

The key nutrient found in fish oil is confirmed to reduce inflammation of the brain, thereby making it highly imperative for the complete development of brain. There is need for people to understand what is important for their overall growth. Published in the journal Neurology, the report caught the attention of one and all. For the research, researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles, recruited over 1,500 people with an average age of 67 and scanned their brains.

It was further concluded that those who had reduced level of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, have brain shrinkage at higher rate than anticipated. “People with lower blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids had lower brain volumes that were equivalent to about two years of structural brain ageing”, said lead researcher Zaldy Tan.

While eating fish could do a lot to maintain cognitive performance, it is being believed that there is need for people to understand that they must incubate a healthy diet in their regular routine.

While foods like chickens, margarine, eggs, milk and bread do have omega 3 fatty acids, it is being told that fish is the ideal source of omega 3 fatty acids. In addition, omega 3 fatty acids are found to provide reduced risk of heart attacks. Looking at the benefits, Britons are being suggested to consume fish at least twice a week.
