First-ever Arab American, Muslim Solicitor General sworn in on Quran

Michigan: At a sunny afternoon of Saturday, Fadwa Hammoud was sworn the first Arab-American and first Muslim Solicitor General of Michigan.

The Attorney General of Michigan, Dana Nessel appointed Fadwa Hammoud as Solicitor General, a top appellate lawyer for the state of Michigan.

To follow with Hammoud’s religious beliefs, she was sworn in with her hand on the Holy Quran instead of the traditional Christian Bible at a beautiful stone building of Fordson High School.

At the age of 11, Hammoud immigrated from a small town in Lebanon to the United States. 22-years later, she made history sworn into office on the Quran.

“Yes, it’s true that an Arab Muslim person hasn’t held this office before. I carry those identities and all that they teach me about loving equity and justice with me into this work,” said Hammoud who is also the first woman to be appointed to the job in Michigan.

“Believe me when I say that words would fail in describing my gratitude today,” she added.

“With that said, it is with great hope for the future of our state, and because of the strength each of you has given me, I am prepared to elevate my level of service to represent our state in the highest of courts as your Solicitor General.”
