First cyber conviction in Hyderabad

A man who was arrested in 2004 for publishing pornographic material of his ex-wife on a matrimonial site and sending obscene mails to her family, was convicted under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

This is the first case in CCPS, CID Hyderabad that has ended in conviction.

Additional Director General of Police, CID, U. Ramamohan said the accused Sanaulla Faisal was arrested in 2004 after a complaint was registered against him by the family of his ex-wife. He was running a computer business, and within a year of the marriage he had allegedly started to harass his wife, and she filed for divorce.

To take revenge on his ex-wife and her family, Faisal created a profile in the name of the victim on a matrimonial site and started posting obscene comments and pictures on it. The photos were taken when they were married.

He also started sending obscene e-mails to her family members.

After the case was registered, Faisal’s house was raided and his camera and computer were seized and sent for forensic examination.

An incriminating report from the forensic laboratory regarding the material seized helped the prosecution to clinch the case, and the VI Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court, Nampally, convicted the accused on February 1, 2012.

The sentence is one year’s imprisonment and a fine of Rs 12,000. The accused will have to undergo additional imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

Mr U. Ramamohan said, “We have arrested 30 people for cyber crimes. We recently caught a doctor and some engineers.”
