Washington, June 24: The decision by US President Barack Obama to sack Army General Stanley McChrystal in Afghanistan points to America’s deepening war policy crisis, a report says.
The White House was clearly unhappy with the controversial comments by McChrystal and his aides which appeared in the Rolling Stone magazine, Inter Press Service (IPS) revealed in a June 23 report.
General David Petraeus replacing McChrystal was the result of dissatisfaction with the general’s handling of the war, IPS wrote.
In calling on Petraeus, the Obama administration appears to be taking a page from former President George W. Bush’s decision in 2006 to “rescue” the war in Iraq which was generally perceived as having become an embarrassing failure, the report added.
When Petraeus took command in Iraq in 2007, he was also to implement a new strategy to counter militancy in the war-torn nation.
On Wednesday, the US president substituted McChrystal with Petraeus after former mocked a string of top Washington officials and raised speculations about possible divisions in the Obama administration about the war.
Obama, however, denied that his decision to change the commander of the Afghan front was based on differences with McChrystal over war strategy.
