Bhind: A large number of firearms being allegedly carried illegally were seized from two men in the district, ahead of the byelection to the Ater Assembly seat here, police said today.
The two persons have been arrested, they said.
The police got a tip-off that the two men were going to transport the firearms in a tractor-trolley.
But, the duo changed the plan and brought the weapons on a motorcycle by hiding them in a sack full of potatoes, Superintendent of Police, Bhind, Anil Singh Kushwaha said.
When the two men were intercepted, they told the police that they were carrying potatoes in the sack.
However, when the sack was opened, the weapons were found in it, the SP said.
The seized firearms included four 315 bore rifles, one 12 bore rifle, four 12 bore hand guns, two country-made pistols and 20 cartridges, he said.
The two arrested persons were identified as – Mohar Singh (35) and Maan Singh (22).
They brought the weapons from Khilli village in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district, police said.
The byelection in Ater Assembly constituency is scheduled to be held on April 9.
