Fire ravages through 100 huts, 1 killed

Srikakulam, June 18: A young woman lost her life when fire ravaged about 100 huts, turning them to ashes on late Thursday night at Penasam village, G Sigadam mandal of Srikakulam district.

The victim is identified as 19-year-old Pidugu Adilakshmi.

The fire is believed to have started when Adilakshmi accidently knocked down a kerosene lamp while cooking. The lamp fell on the can of kerosene which spread the flames rapidly.

Adilakshmi could not escape from the spreading flames and she became victim to the inferno.

The fire ravaged through the adjoining huts since they all were in row and before attempts to control the blaze were even initiated, about 100 huts were affected.

The fire personnel were alerted and fire tenders from Ponduru, Rajam, Chipurupalli villages reached the spot. The fire was brought under control thereafter.

The Tahsildar T Sitharamurti of the mandal reached the accident spot and took appropriate measures.
As per primary estimates in this fire accident, property around rupees 50 lakhs was gutted. The aggrieved villagers lamented that this was the first time such a major loss had occurred in their village.
