Fire in oil tanker ‘Orchid’ under control: Coast Guard

Kochi, May 08: Fire which broke out tonight in the Indian-flagged oil tanker ‘Orchid’, about 40 nautical miles off Kannur in north Kerala, has been brought under control, Coast Guard sources said.

All the 29 Indian crew are safe, sources in the Mangalore Coast Guard told PTI in Kochi.

The vessel had left Mangalore at 12 pm today, they said, adding the fire had broken out in the engine room and it was “under control now”.

Efforts are on to contact ‘Annie Besant’, the Coast Guard vessel that left for the accident spot from Mangalore, the sources said.

No oil spill had been reported so far, they said.
