Mumbai, February 19: A fire officer was killed and eight others, including six firemen, were injured in a major blaze at a shopping centre in suburban Borivali today.
The injured, who sustained burn injuries and suffocation, were rushed to nearby hospitals, fire brigade officials said.
Pradeep Zagade, assistant station officer of the fire department, died due to suffocation even though he was wearing a breathing set, Fire Bridage Chief Uday Tatkar told PTI.
Another assistant station officer Vasant Dundgekar and fireman Manoj Mahade were admitted at the ICU in Bhagwati Hospital and were under observation, he said.
According to the officials, the fire broke out in the basement of two-storey Goyal Shopping Centre located near the Borivali railway station.
Twenty-two fire engines and eight water tankers were rushed to spot. “Over 70 firemen were involved in dousing the fire.
