Sharjah, September 10: Eight warehouses of a company in the Sharjah Industrial Area Number 11, stocked with petrochemical materials including printing ink and other chemicals were completely destroyed by a fire that broke out on Wednesday at around 3.30pm.
There were no fatalities and the losses are likely to run into millions of dirhams, Colonel Wahid Al Serkal, Director General of Sharjah Civil Defence Department, said.
Fire-fighting units from Sharjah, Ajman and Dubai were working on bringing the fire under control.
Col. Al Serkal said that the huge flames resulted in loud and continuous explosions of oil barrels and also destroyed the factory’s two vehicles parked inside the premises.
The police had cordoned off the area immediately after the fire engulfed the premises. “This is another major accident of fire apart from other four reported in 2009,” Col Al Serkal said.
“However, the number of fire accidents has reduced this year compared to last year which witnessed around 40 major fire accidents in the various parts of the emirate.”
