Fire in Bandra slum; 15 people injured

Mumbai, June 18: A fire broke out in a slum adjoining the suburban Bandra railway station here in the wee hours on Thursday, leaving 15 people injured and gutting about 200 shanties.

The fire broke out around 0400 hours in the Garibnagar area, disaster management officials said, adding the cause is yet to be ascertained.

“Twenty five fire engines, 16 water tankers and four ambulances were sent to the spot to aide fire fighting operations. So far about 14-15 people have sustained injuries and two have been admitted to Bhabha hospital in Bandra,” they said.

The fire is still to be put out but officials said the situation is under control.

Train services on the Western Railway were largely unaffected by the fire.

The houses of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child actors Azharuddin and Rubina, which are in the same area, were unaffected by the fire, their relatives said.

“The fire broke out across the road and our houses have been unaffected by the fire. We are all safe,” Azharuddin’s mother Shamima said.

Relatives of Rubina also said that their houses were unaffected by the fire and none of the family members have been injured.

The two child stars of the Oscar-winning film are expected to move into their new houses located in suburban Mumbai soon.
