FIR lodged after Max Hospital doc leaves bandage inside lady’s body

Gurgaon police has lodged an FIR against Max Hospital management and its senior doctors for allegedly putting life of a young woman at risk by leaving a cotton bandage in her body during a surgery.

Baroda-resident Shimoni Shroff was operated upon at Max Hospital Gurgaon in March this year, which left her with acute pain in the stomach. She moved to another private hospital where she was again operated and the cotton piece removed.

The lady filed a complaint with local court which directed police to register an FIR against Max India Ltd Chairman Analjit Singh, senior consultant Dr Kaushiki Dwivedi, gynecologist Deepa Mahesweri, senior vice president (HR) Malvika Verma, Director-Service Shubhro Banerjee and other directos under section 308, 336, 337, 511 and 120-B of IPC.

When contacted, Max Hospital said it will cooperate with the investigating authorities as and when approached.

“To protect the medical privacy of Ms Shroff, who was treated at our Gurgaon hospital, we cannot share the specifics of the case with you, but can confirm that the treatment was done with full consent of the Patient. It is unfortunate to hear that she was dissatisfied, and has lodged a complaint.

“It is also unfortunate to hear that some unrelated persons have been impleaded as party in the complaint, we will surely cooperate with the investigating Authorities as and when approached,” it said.

Stating that wellbeing of patients is of utmost importance to it, the statement said, “We would also like to reiterate that at Max Hospital, we place the highest importance on the safety and care of our patients. To this objective, we follow international best practices in consonance with WHO guidelines on surgical safety and our clinical care pathways also conform to international guidelines.”

Hardeep Singh, Station House Officer of the concerned police station, told PTI that no arrest has been made in the case.

As the case relates to the alleged medical negligence, the police has sought a report of Chief Medical Officer (Civil Surgeon), Gurgaon.

The police would take action on the basis of the report of the CMO, he said.
