Hyderabad: In order to fight against cancer, scientists of National Research Centre on Meat, Hyderabad are developing immunity boosting mutton.
According to the report published in Times of India, the project “Production of selenium enriched functional meat through nutrient supplementation in sheep” will help in fighting against diseases/inabilities like cancer, infertility, dementia, low thyroid function and immunity-suppressing condition.
Giving the details of the project, Dr. P. Baswa Reddy, a senior scientist of the Centre told that sheep are given selenium-rich feed.
It may be noted that dietary selenium is an important micro-nutrient that boosts immune responses.
It is also reported that Dr. S. Vaithiyanathan, Director of the National Research Centre on Meat told that the project will be ready by March 2018.
Explaining the role of selenium, Dr. E. Gowtham Reddy of Jubilee Hospitals in Alwal said that it is a potent nutritional antioxidant, TOI reported. It plays a protective role in various types of cancer. Deficiency of Selenium in older persons can also increase the risk of dementia.
