Weam Al Dakheel, a journalist from Saudi Arabia becomes the first woman to deliver an evening news bulletin on television. Saudi TV said on its official Twitter channel.
Saudia TV is part of the Saudi Broadcasting Authority, which also launched youth-focused Saudi Broadcasting Channel earlier this year.
In 2016, Jumanah AlShami was the first woman to present morning newscasts. Today history repeats itself as she becomes the presenter of the main nightly newscast, setting a precedent in a historic first for Saudi TV 1.
The empowerment of Saudi women is a key pillar of Saudi Vision 2030, initiated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and a series of reforms initiated in the Kingdom were aimed at the empowerment of women.
Vision 2030 also aims to increase the percentage of women in the workforce. The past year saw the entrance of some 600,000 Saudi women to the workforce.
Earlier, Flynas, Riyadh-based carrier had announced that it would be recruiting Saudi women as co-pilots and flight attendants for the first time. In June, the Saudi government had lifted a longstanding ban on drivers.
In March, Saudi Arabia had organised its first-ever women’s run, marking a historical moment for its women in the local sports sector. More than 1,500 women had participated in the event.
