Dubai, September 08: The Dubai Municipality today attributed the collapse of a six-storey building at the Galadari intersection last month to the quality and proportion of materials used in its construction.
Municipal Director-General Hussain Lootah, speaking on the sidelines of a majlis held by Dubai Police Chief Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, said the municipality’s technical team had questioned both the quality of materials and the manner in which they have been used.
A big portion of the building under construction collapsed last month. There were no casualties. Sensing danger when they heard walls cracking, twenty-one workers rushed out minutes before the crash.
Lootah said fault also lay in the iron poles used for supporting the concrete used in the building, where an unorthodox structural style had been adopted.
“The technical team has studied the design of the building,” Lootah said. He added the municipality will submit a report to the Dubai Executive Council. Meanwhile, the remnants of the building will be cleared to prevent hazard.
The Acting Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina, had said that the building developers, Hazaa Contracting and Bait Al Emarat Engineering Consultants, were being interrogated in coordination with the municipality.
The civic body had collected samples of the building materials and soil from the site for laboratory tests.
