Father of man killed in Ishrat encounter seeks CBI probe

Ahmedabad, September 08: Father of one of the persons killed in “encounter” in 2004 along with Ishrat Jahan and two others, today filed a petition in Gujarat High Court seeking CBI inquiry into his son’s death, a day after an enquiry concluded that police had killed them in cold blood.

Justice H N Devani, hearing the petition filed by Gopinath Pillai, father of Javed Gulam Mohammad Shiekh alias Pranesh Kumar Pillai, adjourned the matter for tomorrow.

The four people, including Pranesh and Ishrat, a college student, were killed in, what police claimed as an encounter on the city’s outskirts on June 15, 2004. The other two were Amjad Ali alias Rajkumar Akbar Ali Rana and Jisan Johar Abdul Gani.

Police had claimed the four were Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives on a mission to assassinate Chief Minister Narendra Modi. However, a magisterial probe report submitted yesterday concluded that the encounter was fake.

Gopinath, in his petition, demanded that the investigation into the death of his son be transferred to CBI as the officers of the present probe agency were themselves involved in the alleged fake encounter.

He said tainted police officers, D G Vanzara and N K Amin, who are behind bars in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, were also involved in the killing of his son.
