Father, girl murdered, cops offer contrasting versions on motive

Allahabad, January 13: A father-daughter duo was murdered by a group of 10 youths who had attacked their house at Bindki area of Fatehpur district on Tuesday. Five other members of the family sustained injuries in the attack.

The deceased have been identified as Shiv Shanker Upadhyaya (52) and Renu (25). The miscreants decamped with goods and jewellery, and a single barrel gun from the house. The police said some of the accused were arrested and the gun recovered.

Upadhyay’s wife, his son and five-year-old grandson were injured and taken to a nursing home in Kanpur where their condition is said to be stable. Interestingly, the police have offered contrasting versions on the possible motive behind the incident.

Allahabad Range IG Surya Kumar said the assailants belong to the same village and the incident was a result of an old enmity. “The accused tried to mislead investigations by fabricating the scene of robbery. Some of the accused have been traced and the stolen gun recovered,” said the IG. Fatehpur Superintendent of Police V K Garg, however, provided another theory.

“It is a case of robbery and the murders took place when the family showed resistance. The robbers left the victim’s gun which has been recovered from the rear portion of the house,” said Garg.
