Fatah agrees to form unity government

Cairo, June 12: The Palestinian Fatah party has agreed to form a unity government with the Hamas movement in accordance with a reconciliation deal the rival parties signed in May.

The decision was made at a Fatah Central Committee meeting held in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Saturday, Xinhua reported.

During the meeting, acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas “endorsed a general vision concerning the formation of the government,” according to Jamal Muheisen, a member of the committee.

However, no decisions have yet been made about nominees for the cabinet and the post of prime minister, he said.

Fatah and Hamas leaders are to hold talks on Tuesday at their second meeting since they signed an Egyptian-mediated unity deal in Cairo on May 4.

The agreement — seen as a major step toward the formation of an independent Palestinian state — calls for the formation of a joint interim government of technocrats and non-partisan figures.

It also envisages presidential and legislative elections across Palestine within a year.

The deal, however, does not rule on issues such as whether to recognize and negotiate with the Israeli regime.
