Fasting TDP MLA held

Vijayawada, December 16: Police arrested Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Nuzvid legislator C Ramakotaiah, former Mayor Anuradha and two others, who were on a fast-unto-death at Zilla Parishad Guest House, here today.

The arrests were made in the wake of the deteriorating health condition of the MLA and others, police sources said.

However, Mylavaram Legislator Devineni Umamaheswara Rao and party State Secretary B Umamaheswara Rao were not arrested as the other leaders and scores of activists present at the fasting venue prevented it.

The leaders were taken to the Government General Hospital here. Doctors after examining the legislator said the sugar level of Mr Ramakotaiah had fallen and the former Mayor was too weak.

Meanwhile, Mr Devineni strongly condemned the arrest of the leaders and asked Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Sabita Indira Reddy to explain why the arrests were made when the fast was going on peacefully.

The TDP leaders and activists continued their slogans against the police and state government till this morning by denouncing the arrests.

Meanwhile, City Police Commissioner K V Rajendranath Reddy, in a press release late last night, said in view of the ongoing agitations for united Andhra Pradesh, Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) was promulgated for seven days in Vijayawada Police Commissionerate limit since last night.

Mr Reddy said Section 144 was imposed in order to safeguard the peace and security in the city and to prevent any untoward incidents.
