Farmers stir turn violent

Raipur, November 09: A protest by farmers demanding bonus on paddy procurement in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district today turned violent as they attacked the police and indulged in arson burning shops and houses.

Mukesh Gupta, Inspector General of Police, Durg told PTI that the farmers had decided to stage state-wide protests demanding bonus on paddy procurement and power at subsidized rate .

Accordingly, over 1,000 farmers staged a road blockade on on the national highway, police said.

Later, the sloganeering ryots allegedly attacked the policemen following some dispute with them, they said.

In the stone-pelting by farmers, Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Agrawal sustained injuries on his head.

The police were chased out of the spot by the farmers who also torched all houses and shops which came their way. They also burnt Agrawal’s jeep and five other vehicles, police said.
