Hyderabad: Despite winning 9 seats from Telangana State in the Lok Sabha elections, TRS is unable to digest its defeat from Nizamabad, the seat which was represented by K. Kavitha, the daughter of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao.
The seat was won by BJP candidate Dharmapuri Arvind with a majority of 71,057 votes. Congress candidate Madhu Yashki Goud stood a distant third by securing 69,168 or just 6.52% of votes. While Arvind got 480,004 votes (45.24%), Kavitha got 408,947 votes (38.54%).
But the 178 independent candidates, who are mostly farmers, played the real spoilsports for Kavitha. The farmers had contested as independents to lodge their protest against non-formation of Turmeric Board and also non-provision of Minimum Support Price. But the farmers, as it appears from the statistics, contested the elections not in symbolic tone, but in a quite serious mode. All 178 independent candidates put together polled 96,492 votes, which is 25,435 more than the margin of defeat for Kavitha. Only 2,032 voters had pressed the NOTA (None of the Above) button in Nizamabad seat.
Therefore, otherwise symbolic protest by farmers, has brought disaster and a humiliating defeat for Kavitha, a member of Chief Minister’s family.
