Seoni: A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide after he found out that his crop yield was below his expectation, at Antra village in the district, police said today.
Shivprasad Kosre (42) yesterday went to the fields to cut his paddy crop but was shocked to find it damaged. When he found that the yield was less than expected, he allegedly hanged himself from a tree, Barghat police station Assistant Sub-Inspector Prasanna Sharma said.
When Kosre did not return home by night, his family members got worried and searched for him in the field. When they found his body hanging from the tree, they informed the police.
The farmer had borrowed over Rs 15,000 from local villagers to sow his crop and had also taken five acres of land on lease. He was supposed to give half of the produce to the owner of the land, because of which he was distressed for the last few days, Sharma said.
The body was handed over to the deceased’s family after post-mortem, he said.
A case has been registered in this connection and further investigation is on, he said.
