Hyderabad, February 05: Thota Nitin Prasad was prepared to receive his sister Usha Rani at their native place on Wednesday. Two months after joining as a staff nurse at the Park Super Speciality Hospital, Usha Rani planned a visit to her native Gurajala village in Nalgonda district on a two-day leave to see her father recovering from an accident he had met with recently.
But fate had willed otherwise and death came calling for her at the hospital.
Usha Rani was among those trapped in the hospital when a major fire broke out there on Tuesday. With smoke filling the entire building she fell unconscious. She was later rescued and shifted to the Yashoda Hospital but died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday.
“I was looking forward to receiving her as she told me that she would start off soon after completing her night shift. But what we received was the news of her death. It is a shock to our family,” lamented Nitin Prasad.
Usha Rani was about to leave for home after completing her night shift when fire erupted in the hospital.
Another nurse, Rispa, who also died in the mishap on Thursday morning, was the one who came to relieve Rani from duty.
The two friends had breakfast and went to the fifth floor to sign in the register when the mishap occurred.
While Rani fell unconscious after inhaling the smoke, Rispa managed to jump down but suffered serious injuries.
Usha Rani (29) had been shouldering the family responsibilities since her mother died 10 years ago. She did a diploma course and took up job as a nurse to take care of her three sisters, younger brother and the octogenarian father. She worked at several hospitals as a senior nurse before joining the ill-fated Park Hospital.
“Usha Rani’s death is a great loss to her family as they were dependent on her. She was supporting the entire family financially and had even performed the marriage of two sisters. For the sake of family, she even chose not to marry,” Gurajala sarpanch G Mallaiah, who came to the city to receive Usha Rani’s body, told Expresso.
Meanwhile, the management of the Park Hospital had extended Rs 7.10 lakh compensation to Usha Rani’s family.
